“Impressive In Sight and Sound!!”
This model is a unique and impressive build. From the choice to use solid maple all the way ‘round, even the neck (! rare), which gives it a sound quality to hold it’s own with many of the favored spruce or cedar solid tops. But still smooth enough to hang with mahogany. The choice of Florentine cutaway (sexy), Purple Heart binding (unique), and choice of satin instead of a high gloss finish all work so well together. Images on a screen do not do this ukulele justice. Also I thank you for the detail of thin black trim along the binding as well (see photo attached), ties in with the ebony saddle and fingerboard.
It’s just a really well designed ukulele… in sight and it’s sound.
Has a lot of resonance, especially with a fluorocarbon string set. I’ve played around with various string types and sounds good with many (clear fluorocarbons for sure, even D’Addario titaniums gave it a harp-like depth, the maple wood is clear enough to keep those titaniums brighter than on some other ukes. But I currently an in love the powerhouse this ukulele has become with a set of clear fluorocarbons with a smooth wound Low G and a flat wound 3rd string (it’s a Ko’olau Aho set).
Granted, I have many ukes of many sizes and solid wood types… so I play around with different string sets. Do note, I have the tenor size of this model but fully believe that because of Kala’s solid build quality the concert size could also be powerhouse of sound with a low G if you want to give it try. They make it…
