The bass plays remarkably well in spite of a very high action and no real way to lower the action. Flat wound string make the bass sound very much like a standup bass, round wound strings can have a lot of finger noise, my preference is flat wound. Playing through a markbass rig with a 500w vintage head.

The Journeyman Acoustic Electric gives the best of both worlds, unplugged and amplified. I had recently bought the 15th anniversary edition U-Bass, but was unhappy with the round-wound metal strings. Not being a bass player, nor ukulele player, I found with my low skill level I was getting tremendous buzzing pretty much everywhere on the fretboard. I know most seem to prefer the metal round wound strings. With a bit more mileage I’m hoping I will also adapt. In the meantime, i’m thrilled with the journeyman U-bass, with the option Kala gave me of the more forgiving rubber/latex strings and no buzzing at all. Having invented my medical harmonica (a diatonic chord harmonica, which is primarily played as a chording instrument, playing 8 chords -www.harmonicaMD.com), I’m hoping to back up the chordal playing with the U-bass. Thank you Kala for being accommodating and versatile!

I really enjoy this U-Bass. Great sound acoustically. A fine rumbling sound. I just like picking it up and messing around. I haven't plugged it in yet. I like the convenience of the built in tuner. I'm still getting used to the short short scale but I'm getting there.

The U-bass is nice and punchy and the round wound strings allows all the strings to play at the same volume and the E string has a better response than the polyurethane strings.
