I love this bass! I've had it for almost 2 months now. I have been playing a Kala Spalted Maple U-Bass for 4 years, and it is great. Based on reviews available on the internet, I had the distinct impression that all rubber string Kalas play and sound basically the same. After all, they use the same construction, and there's not much tonewood involved to work with. But I was intrigued that the better models come with better tuners and better electronics. I also wanted to go fretless. So this Striped Ebony model had my name on it. As expected, out of the box it sounded pretty much the same as the Spalted Maple model when played through my Fender Rumble 40 combo amp. But, after a month of daily playing, the amplified sound has opened up. Everything is fuller and more powerful. The E string sound in particular is now amazing. It's quite a big change. I'm not sure what to credit for the improvement, probably a combination of factors. The Fishman electronics greatly enhance the ability to shape my sound. I get real control over a wide range. And between the better tuning mechanisms and the Fishman tuner, it's much easier to dial in accurate pitch. Finally, as others have pointed out, the build quality on this model is also better than the lesser models. It's a real beauty. Purchased Oct 2025 from Sweetwater.

I love it! I knew I wanted a new bass challenge. All roads led to the Kala U-bass. It was a pleasure to purchase my brand-new fretless striped ebony U-bass. Once it arrived, the first challenge was to tune it and to get used to the feel of the silicone strings. At the same time, I found myself playing more, and it has been a thrill to be on the journey of learning new sounds and playing in a new way. I've already used it on a recording. And talk about portable! The perfect size, and delivers a huge sound. I'm so happy to have this new addition to my bass family. I still like my Wanderer U-Bass with round wound strings, but really love my new striped ebony fretless
U-Bass with flatwound copper strings and Fishman pickup. It is fun to play, a little challenging being fretless, and sounds great. The strings are much easier on your fingers than the round wound strings, too.
I’m also looking at getting the new solid body when it comes out fretless with flatwounds.
