The newest revolutionary U•BASS® string design from Aquila, the Aquila® Thunderbrown offers players a brand new playing experience and tone, distinct from other pure elastomer strings:

  • The strings ensure a perfect glide of the fingers of the left hand
  • The diameter is reduced to levels comparable to normal coated acoustic bass strings
  • They are made for the first time starting from bio-elastomers of vegetable origin and not from petroleum derivatives
  • The metal added in micronized form is minimal in the first string and maximum in the fourth: this translates into a perfect acoustic and timbral homogeneity of the frame
  • They do not show any 'sausaging effect' over time (strings pulled hard with the hands reduce their diameter in a stable form)
  • The acoustic power is increased, adding to the feasibility of play on a U•BASS® without amplification
  • String tension has been increased compared to that of Aquila® Thundergut, Thunderblack and Thundered.

intermediate ubass player....

Best upright/double-bass-ish sounding strings so far!

My perceptions -- I run a journeyman and had the original white strings (loved the color). Have also used an original ubass (without a rear kick plate) with Road Toad Pahoehoe U•BASS® Strings

To me these seem thinner, and higher tension giving clearer distinction between notes. Love em!

They still don't hurt my fingers like a normal double-bass with metal strings would (mad respect to those chaps), and I'm not searching for an electric bass sound (round/flat/pyramid metal strings)...

Favorite U Bass strings by a mile

The higher tension and overall feel are miles ahead of the stock strings. I had rounds on my U Bass for a little bit. Nothing wrong with them, but I prefer the acoustic tone of these by quite a bit. Slides are beautifully quiet. With all that said, there is more finger sound from my plucking hand when plugged in. Getting quieter with technique changes, but did seem worth mentioning.

Oh yeah!

Totally improved over the stock strings! You won't believe the big sound that comes out of these babys. Had to turn my amp down half. The rebound is much faster (though could still be faster). The feel of the strings is marvelous- no sticking on slides! I could go on and on, but my drummer says not to- just tell them he thought they were decent- big comp coming from him!

excellent sound

these strings maximize the woody tone of a u-bass. and make it loud enough to play on your own without an amp frankly. the name of the strings is a tad odd. i feel like if you were Trying to devise a comical euphemism for poo - you couldn’t possibly find a more suitable solution than Thunderbrown. but that’s hardly a reason to pass on them. plus the color is the best option to go with most ubasses. the black strings get lost in the fretboard and white would be too contrasting. pricey but worth it. one was a tad too thick for the slot on my ubass but i filed the hole a little bit and it came thru fine.
