These strings are truly innovative for at least two reasons. First, they do not use metals like steel or nickel that are stiff, but instead they use copper that is softer and has higher density and result in richer acoustic performance. In fact, the higher the density, the better the sound. Second, these strings feature a bioplastic monofilament core called 'Sugar', which is exclusively produced by Aquila on a global scale. Sugar has been proven to have superior acoustic performance compared to other plastic materials, as evidenced by laboratory measurements.

Only compatible with 4-string Acoustic-Electric Kala U•BASS®.

*Modifications to the nut slots and string holes by an experienced instrument technician may be required. As a streamlined alternative to modifications to the existing nut, the Flat Wound U•BASS® Nut by TUSQ® is available for purchase, to be installed by an experienced instrument technician only.  Due to the change to a higher tension as well, a truss rod adjustment is also recommended.

**Not for use on Solid Body U•BASS®

***Modifications performed by the user will void the manufacturer warranty. Please also note that Kala is not responsible for damages to instruments caused by new string installments.

Aquila Flat Spiral U-BASS Set &TUSQ nut for Flat Wounds

Purchased a used Oscar Schmidt OUB500K-A-U which came with Aquila ThunderGut 68U's. They sound somewhat mellow and are easy on the fingers but I don't like the rubbery feel. I researched several non-polyurethane type strings, specifically flat wounds. I chose these Aquila Flat Spirals as my first attempt.

I also purchased the U-Bass TUSQ nut for Flat Wounds. The nut width was about 1mm wider than the fretboard but that's ok. The nut height was about 7mm too tall. The attached image shows how much material needed to be removed from the bottom (compared to the original nut). I did not file the grooves at all. It took several iterations to get this just right. I ended up taking a bit too much off the bottom but corrected that by using just enough mylar shims to eliminate the slight buzz on the low E. A mere .35 mm worth of shims made all the difference. Used a dab of wood glue to secure it in place. There is zero buzz on any open strings.

The ThunderGut strings did not have any washers inside the soundboard. Don't know if any poly strings use washers. No washers were provided with the Aquila Flat Spirals. I installed 4 brass washers that I chamfered on the ID to better seat the beads at the end of the strings. One edge (D string) had to be further modified as the internal brace was not exactly centered.

Lastly, I tightened the single action truss rod about 1/4 turn to further improve the overall action. Measured at the 12th fret, E is 0.09 in. and G is 0.10 in. Still no…

      Wonderful strings

I liked the original steel strings but I knew I needed flat wounds. Turns out what I needed were these strings. Wow what a difference. These are expressive and musical and sounds very acoustic. I love them. And they are great to play. So glad I bought these even though they are a little pricey.

      Copper flatwound U-Bass strings

I mentioned these in my review of the Striped ebony fretless U-Bass I recently purchased. It took a couple of weeks for the strings to settle in and they are now staying in tune longer. I love the look and sound of copper and being flatwound they are a pleasure to play - much easier on your fingers. I’m just wondering if they will turn green in time. 😊
