Very playable, fun and portable bass experience
I bought the Kala Scout to use as a portable bass when I'm traveling and for my primary living room bass to practice and noodle on. It is very good for these roles.
Overall construction is very good. It feels very solid and made from good components. After a short breaking-in period, strings stay in tune. The sound and feel of the polyurethane strings takes a bit of getting used to. Intonation is generally pretty good. Built-in tuner and EQ work well.
There are some minor nitpicks. Some slight burrs can be seen in the bridge where the string enters the body and I don't care much for how the wires inside (between the control panel and pickup) seem to wander around freely. The E string sounds a little muddy and kind of dead compared to the others.
The biggest problem was inconsistent volume between strings when playing through an amp; from the factory, the E was virtually inaudible. Kala support worked with me to make some adjustments to the tension over the bridge and piezo pickups, but ultimately I solved it by minor surgery on the one-piece bridge to make it a four-piece bridge; with each piece pressing on the pickup independently, the volume through the amp is infinitely better and more consistent.
Overall, very pleased with this.
