Excellent Ukulele, Cannot Find the Blemish

Blemish: I've been over the uke top to bottom and side to side with a jeweler's loupe, and I cannot find any sign of an imperfection. I'm not going to bother removing the strings to inspect the underside of the nut & saddle or to peer inside the belly with a light. I'll just chalk it up to Kala's standards for defining a "blemish" are much, much higher than mine. To my eye, the uke is flawless.

As to the uke itself, turns out bamboo is a wonderful tonewood. (Tonegrass?) The sustain lingers like a tuning fork. Tone is both punchy and sweet, and I'm feeling the vibration of notes on the back of the uke against my body like the antique koa heirloom uke I was blessed to handle one time in Maui. I bought this uke as a bit of a tonewood novelty to go along with my all-solid mango tenor pineapple uke, but Kala's bamboo tenor is no novelty. This is a high quality instrument; it might plausibly surpass my Kala all-solid acacia/cedar tenor as my main performing instrument.

And sound quality aside, the looks are brilliant. Kala made the right choice keeping the uke simple and unadorned to let the visual quality of the bamboo shine. It plays like a treasured antique and looks like one too.

    Beautiful bamboo tenor

I needed my electron microscope to find the blemish. Seriously, the ukulele is gorgeous and unique, and the sound is bright with great resonance. An instant favorite! Thanks, Kala, for a fine instrument and good buying experience.

    It sings!

I was intrigued by the look and unique construction of the bamboo. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how bright the tone is. It’s really fun to play.
